Learning How to Treat Anxiety Disorders and Finding Natural Panic Attack Remedies

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Tess Thompson With over 19 million adults affected by them, anxiety disorders are the most common of all mental illnesses in the United States. There are many different types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and panic attacks, to name a few, but all of them produce symptoms of excessive fear and dread and can be debilitating to those who suffer from them. Learning how to treat anxiety disorders requires time, practice and patience because in almost all cases, anxiety is best treated by behavioral therapy and not by prescription medication. Panic attacks are a particularly disabling kind of anxiety disorder. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Panic Disorder is characterized by repeated episodes of intense fear that occur frequently and without warning. Panic attacks can last anywhere from a couple of minutes to over a half hour. Most people who suffer from panic episodes usually experience sweating, trembling, rapid heart beat and shortness of breath, and can sometimes also experience chills, cramps, hot flashes, nausea and dizziness. Panic Disorder is most effectively treated with a combination of psychotherapy and learned relaxation techniques. Many researchers believe that panic attacks are tied to the body’s natural “fight-or-flight” response to danger, and learning to recognize the physiological sensations that accompany this response is an important first step in anxiety relief. Therapy can also focus on identifying the irrational fears that produce attacks (fear of dying, fear of embarrassment…etc) and teaching coping skills. Relaxation and imagery techniques are also commonly taught to help those who suffer from Panic Disorder to alleviate symptoms of panic attacks while they are experiencing them. In all cases, exercises and techniques taught in therapy must be practiced daily in order to be truly effective. While prescription medication is not usually an appropriate treatment for Panic Disorder, there are natural treatments for anxiety which have been used safely and effectively for centuries to treat symptoms of anxiety. Lavender (or Lavendula Augustifolia) is on of the most popular popular panic attack remedies and is used for its calming properties and its role as a general nervous system tonic. Passion Flower and Lemon Balm are other excellent natural anxiety and panic attack treatments. If left untreated, Panic Disorder can intensify to a crippling degree and leave some sufferers fearful of even leaving home. Professional help and a true commitment to battling the disorder are necessary components in your ability to overcome your anxiety and to begin to lead a less anxiety-ridden, healthier life. How to Save Money While Planning Your Dream Wedding

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Penny Olson Believe it or not, you can plan a wedding without throwing yourself and your families into debt for the next decade. I am going to give you a few suggestions and guidelines to make this possible without having to cut corners. All it takes is a little discipline and the willingness to stick to a budget. The first thing that you can do is make a list of things that are “required” in planning a wedding. This includes your dress, his tux, guests, a cake, flowers, decorations for the reception, food, music, drinks, photographers, and whatever else you feel are the bare essentials. Then sit down with your fianc and decide on the five most important things on this list. This is where you can splurge a bit. Five may sound like a very small number, but there are an awfully lot of decisions that need to be made while wedding planning, even if youre keeping it simple. If you can identify the five most important things before you start, it will keep you from letting all the “minor details” get out of control. Trust me, things can easily snowball if you dont have a solid plan before you set yourself free into the world of wedding planning. Your fist assumption may be that a wedding planner is out of the question. In many cases this is true. But dont rule them out until you have talked with a few of them. He or she may be able to give some great suggestions on how you can stick to your budget. Once you start your planning, you will quickly see that its a little overwhelming. There are literally hundreds of photographers, pastry chefs, and florists in every city. It may help you to work with someone that knows the ropes and can help you find the companies with the highest quality work at the most reasonable prices. Another thing that can help you pinch pennies is to plan your wedding during the off-season. The most popular months for weddings are May through October. Most venues will lower their prices during the months that are slower so that they can fill their calendars. Ask for the price list for the entire year and also find out the dates that they have open so that you know what you have to work with. Its never good news to set your heart on a date, only to find out that its booked. Destination weddings are a great way to save on your big day. It may not sound like a possibility, but when researching my wedding, I was absolutely amazed with what I found. There are tons of places that offer package deals on weddings. You can get discounted rooms in spectacular resorts if you plan to hold your wedding on their property. They have really incredible settings. You can get married on the beach, in a pretty gazebo, next to a waterfall, or even on an inactive volcano in a beautiful national park! The sky is the limit if youre open to traveling. And most of these places are all-inclusive, so you also get meals, drinks and entertainment. You may even decide to stay right where you are for your honeymoon. Keep your eye out for “Off The Rack” sales, you can get dresses that are normally very expensive at highly discounted prices because a few brides have merely tried them on for size. You may need to get it dry cleaned just to be sure, but even if you need to have it altered, youd have to even if you ordered it in your size. Another option is to wear your mother’s or your grandmother’s dress. You could have a few alterations made for the perfect fit or to update it a little. You could also choose to go with a dress that would normally be considered a bridesmaids dress. There are a lot of websites on the Internet that have dresses in myriads of colors. But you can change the colors right on the photo. It is so much fun to see what they look like in white or ivory; all you do is point to the color and click. Although, I would not recommend ordering anything before you try it on, you may not be able to return it. Call around to bridal shops in your area and see if they carry the style, then go and try it on. Sometimes they look very, very different in the photographs. In the long run, this could cut hundreds or even thousands out of your budget. Dont forget, youre only going to wear your dress once. You can get all of your finishing touches on sale too, like Swarovski bridal jewelry or Swarovski hair pieces. This next tip may be the biggest, and possibly the hardest of them all. Cut down on the guest list. You could do this in a few ways, I once attended a wedding where they had quite a few people at the ceremony and only a few at dinner, but later opened it up to everyone again, for drinks and dancing. You could also have a very small, formal ceremony and reception dinner for very close family and friends and follow it with a very relaxed and informal pig roast and picnic the following day. Whatever suits you will be fine, but I have to admit through experience that this is the part that took the most discipline. There are a few ways to save at the reception, you may consider finding a place to hold your reception that will allow you to bring your own liquor and then all you need to do is hire a few people to tend the bar. You may not wish to serve a three or four course meal. Buffets are very acceptable ways to keep your guests happy and still save a significant amount of money. Another nice thing to do is have a dessert only reception, or you could cater the whole thing yourself and have your families prepare their favorite dishes. And last but certainly not least, DIY, DIY, DIY. There are a lot of very simple things that you can do yourself that can easily be as beautiful as purchasing everything for your wedding. You would be surprised at how little time it will take you and the unbelievable difference in the balance of your checkbook. Make the decorations on the table out of hurricanes with glass gems in the bottom of water with a floating candle on top. You could even add a goldfish or two if you like! You could ask your family members to lend you their favorite crystal and set them around on the tables with scattered rose petals and votive candles among them to make very inexpensive, yet elegant centerpieces. You can also make your own invitations. There are a lot of companies that sell software that will provide you with pretty graphics, fonts, and techniques to make them flawless. The Internet is a great resource that will help you come up with endless ideas and the tips to make them a reality. The best tip that I have for everyone that is planning a wedding: It is a wedding, which means that if you go home on that day and you are married to the person that you love, then your mission has been accomplished. All of these other things are merely details. The wedding is only the first day; its having a good marriage that is really important. Dont let yourself get too overwhelmed with all of this, just have fun and enjoy your day. Design of Retail Store Displays

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Ron Maier The purpose of a retail display is to accurately showcase your products in a way that provides customers with an opportunity to see how the product might appear when purchased. Let us take the example of a retail clothing store. Typically, displays implement mannequins, hangers, and other items which provide the customer with a look at the product in a setting that is not “on a rack”. While this may seem pretty simple, an effective store display must take into account the season, the intended use of the item, the demographics of the customer base, and more. An effective retail store display is the product of much effort, combining the talents of architects, interior designers, and visual marketers. When put all together, these professionals create a symphony in which your products are highlighted and accented to ensure maximum sales potential. One question to consider is the intended use of the item. Is it formal wear, active wear, or business casual? A display should take these types of things into consideration, as not only does the display of the items themselves sell the product, but the accents to the display help create an appropriate setting. The posture of the mannequins should reflect a representative posture of a person who would wear the clothing; for instance, a soccer uniform would warrant a running pose, whereas a tuxedo may warrant an upright, more dignified stance. The season should also be taken into account, especially in the determination of display accents. For example, a display featuring spring active wear might include a kite or picnic gear, summer bathing suits might include rafts or flotation devices, fall casuals might include leaves or pumpkins, and winter sweaters might include holiday decor. The idea is to bring the customer into a place and time with which they are familiar, making the purchase of the product a less risky venture for the customer. Finally demographics should be considered. It is self evident that children’s displays will be quite different from a display geared toward a young professional male, which in turn would be easily distinguishable from a display in a lingerie store. Don’t Fake It Until You Make It

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Dave Lorenzo Fake it till you make it. This is a tag line that one of my former bosses was quite fond of. She would regularly represent our business as having capabilities that exceeded our ability to deliver. She never outright lied in her marketing efforts. She simply positioned us as a different kind of company one that she thought our customers wanted to do business with. In the end she was setting us up for failure. Your brand positioning should be based upon your capability to deliver. This is as true for your personal brand as it is for a business brand. One of the key components in positioning yourself is determining who you want to attract as a customer. Ultimately, your brand is the sum of your customers perceptions of you. In order to influence the perception of your potential clients, you must achieve a high level of self-awareness. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you develop your brand: You are what you are. Anytime you represent yourself to be something that you are not, you run the risk of losing a customer forever. You need to position yourself as different and valuable. Those qualities must be your own. You must be honest with your customers and with yourself. Consistency is important. Regardless of the business you are in, your customers must be able to count on you. If you want to impress your customer, dont complete an assignment early one time beat your deadline every time. Your client will know that you are the firm to call if she must have a critical project completed on time. Dont count on getting a second chance. First impressions are critical. You cant take back something you said to a customer. Everything is on the record. You should be yourself, but always remember that your reputation takes a lifetime to build and just a few minutes to destroy. Be Clear and Concise. Too many people use complex language in order to appear intelligent and just wind up confusing people. Often, complexity makes the speaker seem pompous and condescending. Keep every interaction and every point of contact clear and simple. Be transparent. Communicate simply and directly. Show, dont tell. If you explain a concept to a customer, he may understand it intellectually. But, if you tell him a story, show him a picture, or perform a demonstration, he will make an emotional connection to the event, to the experience, and to you. The more of his senses you can involve, the stronger the impression you will make. The key word here is impression. Make an impact or youll fade like a distant memory. Ultimately honesty wins out in marketing. Powerful brands deliver on their brand promise every time. Faking it is one way to seriously hurt your chances of making it in the real world. Join An RC Club

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Nikoli Funston If you become a RC enthusiast, you will be happy to know there are others just as passionate. In this case, we are talking about RC Clubs Quite often, people who share a common interest or hobby will band together to form a club. The idea is to interact with others to exchange information and to arrange competitions or activities appropriate to the hobby. The Remote Control hobby is no exception. Remote Control clubs flourish worldwide. In most cases, the Remote Control club will be dedicated to a specific area of the RC field. This might be a flying club or a boating club. Automobile and truck RC clubs generally sponsor racing events. The best place to get information about Remote Control clubs in your area is through the associates at your local RC Hobby Shop. Many clubs will be sponsored by the Hobby shop. In many cases, the Hobby Shop will provide space for the club. This might include indoor racing areas for competitions. The Hobby Shop associates will often be members of local clubs themselves, even if the Shop is not affiliated with the club. A second source for locating clubs is the internet. There are several websites that provide lists of various clubs complete with contact information. Many clubs are organized under national or even international associations. These groups generally have websites also that give listings of member clubs and their locations. The RC Club is a great place to meet others that share your interest, but it is also a great place for a beginner to get a good start. It is not necessary to already be deeply involved in the RC hobby to benefit from a club membership. Teaching others the ins and outs of the hobby is one of the primary functions of most clubs. This is sometimes done informally with just the sharing of knowledge between the experienced and the inexperienced. Other times it is done with formal training sessions. Competition is one of the functions of many RC clubs. This may consist of racing which can be done with planes and boats as well as cars and trucks. It may also consist of shows that recognize design and decoration as well as test skill in operation. A Remote controlled vehicle or toy can be fun alone. It is not necessary to share this fun with others if you do not wish to do so. It is not a requirement, by any means. Yet, many thousands of people have found that their enjoyment of the hobby is enhanced by sharing their experiences with others. If this idea appeals to you, the Remote Control Club is waiting. Like Father

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Wayne Mitchell Direct Answers - Column for the week of July 5, 2004 I was married for 21 years to a man who enjoyed strip clubs, drinking, and his buddies. These things became important to him after we married, and part of his job as an undercover cop. He often brought home pictures of himself with strippers to show me. Throughout our marriage I took care of our two children, the household, and worked full-time without a contribution from him beside his paycheck. I tried to talk to him because we never spent time together, he did not support me as a wife and mother, and I needed more from him as his wife. Things did not improve. They continued to deteriorate . Our marriage relationship ceased to exist. Months before I left him, I tried to talk one more time and told him, “If this is all there is, I don’t want any more.” All he said was, “Stop crying and come to bed.” Seven years ago, when our children were 20 and 17, I left him. I felt they were old enough now. They would better understand that we did not love each other and I stayed because of them. I was also tired of being verbally abused on a regular basis by my son. My children could not understand my feelings. I was and still am seen as the villain for destroying their “family.” Even though I was on my own at the time, my ex-husband told my children he caught me in bed with someone, which was very destructive of my relationship with my children. He also told them that my best friend and I were lesbians. Neither story was true. To this day my son thinks I was unfaithful to his father and keeps inferring that is why I left and that his father had no fault in the divorce. I eventually met a wonderful man, and we have been happily married for two years. I love him more than anything, and he loves and respects me like I’ve never been. Rachael Rachael, Harry Chapin’s song “Cat’s in the Cradle” is about a son who follows his father’s not-very-good example. One day, after the father talks on the phone with his son, the older man has a realization. He says, “As I hung up the phone it occurred to me, he’d grown up just like me. Yeah, my boy was just like me.” So you stayed for the children, and you wound up with a son like your husband. All blanket rules have exceptions, and the exception to “stay for the sake of the children” occurs when the other parent’s example is a detriment to the child. As a police officer, your former husband knows better than to destroy a mother’s image in the eyes of her children. His lies reveal everything about who he is as a person. Unfortunately, staying bolstered your ex-husband’s assertions. How bad a husband could he be if you stayed so long? That’s his argument. Your son’s perceptions have been twisted by his father. He may be trying to win his dad’s praise by torturing you, or he may be manipulating you into trying to win his love. Or perhaps he is simply acting out of defensiveness. He may think, if mom stayed with someone who abused her because of me, that makes me complicit. I’d rather believe dad’s story. When we do something we believe is wrong for the benefit of others, we cannot expect things to turn out well. A mother teaches a girl what kind of woman to be and what kind of wife to be. A father teaches a boy what kind of man to be and what kind of husband to be. In Harry Chapin’s tune, the son says, “I’m gonna be like you, Dad. You know I’m gonna be like you.” That can have wonderful results or disastrous results depending on who we are as parents. Failed at Weight Loss: Here’s Hope

Friday, September 21st, 2007

By Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP All Diets Work: No Diets Work Have you lost weight in the past only to regain it a short time later? Have you followed every diet including Atkins, South Beach, the Drinking Man’s diet, the Peanut Butter diet, or even the Chocolate Diet? All of these diets work, and none of them work, meaning, you can and probably do lose weight on any of them, but you won’t keep it off. Why not? Because the day will come when the diet is over and you’re right back to your regular routine; the same routine that got you fat in the first place. In the past diets carried a warning not to stay on them longer than the prescribed period; usually two weeks. Today’s popular diets are attempting to style themselves as lifestyle choices, but this isn’t working either. People want to be able to eat a sandwich now and then. They want the bun! Strive for balance, and choose the foods you prefer and you’ll have a better chance at success. The main idea with a “weight loss diet plan” is a significant reduction in calories. Very few diet plans even point out that physical activity is a reliable way to lose weight without sacrificing valuable muscle tissue in the process. They don’t mention exercise because it’s not popular. We equate exercise with gym class and that wasn’t fun. People don’t want to exercise, and they don’t really want to eat differently; they just want to lose weight and they want it done yesterday. Small Changes: Big Answer to Weight Loss Blues Here’s what I recommend to my clients; this may make sense for you too. Start today, and work one day at a time making one or two small changes such as switching to the calorie-free soft drinks and then weaning yourself down to one or two a day. It doesn’t have to be drastic. In fact, trying to make drastic changes in your lifestyle never work because while you may be happy in the beginning, you slowly grow into miserable toward the end. In fact, that’s the problem right there: you anticipate an end. Weight Loss Comes Down to Choices Talk to people who’ve lost weight and kept it off and they’ll tell you, “There is no end.” It’s about choices you make every day. Are you choosing to take an extra helping, even though you’re comfortably full? Change that one behavior and you’re on your way. Do you choose to take the bag of chips to the couch? Change that, in fact, stop eating on the couch entirely, and you’re one step closer. Eliminate the habit of grabbing a few bites on your way past the candy dish, and that alone can shave several pounds. I once lost 8 pounds simply by eliminating the candy dish I kept at my desk (not to mention the money I saved). Choose one small habit or behavior at a time, not your entire existence, and you’ll have a much better chance to reach your weight loss goals. Push or Pull?

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Michael Knowles It’s the same old tune. I sat there listening to a man with good ideas who was nevertheless stuck trying to get them to market. His short-cropped, grizzly grey hair and the lines on his face told a dozen stories about his trials and tribulations. “You know why most businesses fail?” Ron said. He didn’t wait for my answer. “Undercapitalization. They can’t get enough money together to kick things off and hang in there until they get enough customers.” I nodded. “Sure. I’ve heard that one a hundred times. Ever wonder why?” Ron blinked. “Well, I always thought it was about who you know. If you don’t have the connections you might as well forget it.” “If that’s so, then why was New Coke such a failure? Coca-Cola certainly didn’t have a capitalization problem. And they knew plenty of people.” “Yeah, but that’s Coca-Cola,” Ron said. “I’m talking about the small businesses. We don’t get that kind of edge.” “Ron,” I said, “You have all the edge you need. But the reason you aren’t getting the attention you want is simple.” Ron sat back and crossed his arms. “All right, my friend. Tell me what I need.” I smiled. “What you need, Ron, is a new pair of eyeballs.” “What?” “You keep looking at what you do through the same eyes. Your eyes. What if you could see your product the way your potential customers will see it?” “Yeah, sure,” Ron snorted. “Just hand me that crystal ball. “Don’t need one,” I said. “Because I’ve got something better.” Push Vs. Pull Ron was making the same mistake many of us make. He kept pushing his own vision of his value out into the world and expected others to get it. When they didn’t, he blamed everything but the real culprit. Himself, of course. In companies from high-tech to the neighborhood grocery, the ones who deeply understand their market and the people they serve are the ones who survive and thrive. You must take the time to understand what you do best and then learn to perceive your unique value the way your ideal customers do. It’s hard work that requires self-knowledge, imagination, and some research. The good news is that the results enable you to do the kind of outreach that brings customers to you. Here are four suggestions for getting started: Understand and write down what you do best. There is nothing you can do that’s more important that identifying those things you do consistently well. If you haven’t done this sort of personal inventory before, you’d best get to it before stepping too far out into the business world. Think about the kinds of problems to which you’re naturally attracted. Follow them back to the people who have those problems, and you’re on the road to meeting your ideal customer. Describe the person who has the sort of problems you’re able to solve, right down to what they dream about at night. Write a little story about the ideal customer using your product or service. Be imaginative, but ground the story in reality. Put it into a third-person narrative and see what comes out. Find out where your ideal customers congregate, what they read, and what they listen to. Become familiar with those venues and participate in them yourself. Go out there with an open mind seeking information about their problems, and you’ll find yourself meeting potential customers in due course. Relationships Begin with Your Interest in Others In the end, the relationships you build with your ideal customers begin with your honest, heartfelt interest in their problems. People will know when you are driven soley by the quest for money. Sure, we all need to earn a living, but when we allow ourselves to be driven by the need to feed, so to speak, we give off an aura of self-absorption that sends a negative message to the world. But if you focus on really seeing what your customers want from you and deliver that as completely and as positively as you can, the money will take care of itself. Isn’t that right, Ron? *** Michael Knowles, co-author of The Entrepreneur’s Concept Assessment Toolbook (available at http://www.booklocker.com/books/1988.html or Amazon.com) helps businesses take what they do best and focus it on success. No more Jordan Almonds! Today’s Brides are Planning More Innovative Wedding Favors

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Pavika Wilson Gone are the Jordan Almonds wrapped in tulle, miniature picture frames with name cards and votive candles. Wedding favors have come a long way from the traditional offerings we’ve become accustomed to. Todays innovative brides have come up with more unique and interesting favors for their guests to treasure.
