However, a considerable amount of safety is required in getting a drastic weight loss. Otherwise detrimental health problems may arise. Most of these products drastically reduce hunger and as a way reduces intake of food, which deposits fat in the body, these products do supply the necessary nutrients the body needs in spite of their primary objective drastic weight loss. As per the famous sayingcharity begins at home, so does drastic weight loss exercises. People should practice slow or brisk paced walking, jogging or even walking over a treadmill, gardening, dusting, rearranging furniture, scrubbing floors or washing windows during some parts of leisure hours at home as part of first step toward drastic weight loss efforts. These activities keep the body active any doesnt allow it to gather the extra fat and burns down the unnecessary ones. Apart from these swimming is a very good exercise for drastic weight loss. Tennis, football, basketball are very good outdoor games suitable for drastic weight loss, which ensures that the entire body experiences strenuous physical activity yet the mind remaining fresh with the refreshment of the game. How to Get Pennsylvania Criminal Records Quickly

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Rosanne O’Malley Employers, do you have the perfect candidate for the job, but you want to know if he or she has been convicted of a crime? How do you get Pennsylvania criminal records? In Pennsylvania, state adult criminal history information is kept in two places. At the county level, the records are kept by the main county courthouse in the county seat (the main city or town for that county). For example, criminal history information would be kept for Montgomery County in that county’s Courthouse, located in Norristown, PA. The records will be located in the Office of the Clerk of Quarter Sessions. A manual search of the written files, or electronic files, whether computer or microfiche, can be time-consuming but is possible. At the state level, these records are kept by the State Police’s Central Repository in Harrisburg, PA. Access to these records is limited to the individual subject of the records, or his or her legal representative, to potential employers in certain situations or some noncriminal agencies. To obtain the records, a written form must be submitted accompanied by a fee and can take up to six weeks to the forwarded to the requestor. In today’s electronic age, however, much legal information can be found online. Many counties maintain their own websites through which county records can be accessed. Who can obtain the information through these websites may be limited to certain individuals and/ or agencies. To find out more, you can contact the local county courthouse or bar association. The Pennsylvania State Police maintains a website through which the information can be requested, but any particulars of the records would be sent in hard copy form by US mail. Finally, there are online websites that are fee-based but will gather the information and send it to you. Search results may include the individual’s name, date of birth, conviction date, offenses charged, disposition and risk level. A Good Marketer: What’s the Measurement?

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Catherine Franz As a business owner, you know how valuable being good at marketing is. Yet, I have found working with business owners for the past 20 plus years that 99.9% of them have never defined what a good marketer is — what it means in their terms. Lets take a moment right now and think about what you are measuring yourself against. Without a measurement, you can’t possibly know what you are shooting for and this will lead to a misconstrued representation or always believing you are never good enough or doing enough. Yes, the best measurement of good marketing is the revenue you are receiving. Yes, theres nothing like the confirmation that people are opening their wallets to your business. Theres also feedback — the testimonials — they are good for pats on the back or to show other people that someone cares about what you offer. Is that it though? To most big companies it always the bottom line — profit after taxes. Its how much the stockholders make or some other reference to money. Yet for entrepreneurs who purposes when their own direction because they “wanted something more” what is the measurement. What is the “something more?” Okay, you want to be happy and have fun along way. Oops and before I forget to have balance between the business and the rest of your life. Hey, I think we’ve made good progress so far in starting to define what your measurement definition of a “good marketer” is, didn’t we? Not actually, we defined what you want for the whole business most of the time with a few exceptions, like the revenue. But what makes up a “good marketer” in your definition. Great, I love challenges, don’t you? Today, lets take a few minutes out sometime and ask ourselves, “What is my measurement of who I would be if I were a good marketer?” Here is a list of questions to guide you as you think through and create our own definition. On a scale of 1-10, give each of these a measurement of where you know you stand right at this moment. 1. How well do you think you know who you are selling to or who has purchased from you in the past? 2. How well do you KNOW the principles of marketing? 3. How well do you practice those principles? 4. How well does the public understand what you do? 5. How do you teach them what they need to know to understand what you do? 6. Are you leaving it up to someone else to do this, or have you taken it upon yourself to make sure you educate at every possible opportunity? 7. How well do you know what you are selling your uniqueness, your products uniqueness? 6. Do you change your marketing strategy frequently whenever you get tired of it? 7. Is the change timing when the market has changed or when you are tired of it? 8. Are you enjoying what you have accomplishments or beating yourself up for what is left to do? 9. Are you enjoying the learning process as fun or frustrating? Are you allowing additional time to learn and grow? Are you including the learning time to be included in with the “this needs to give me results” time? How are you measuring that growth? 10. Do you repeat your offers frequently? Did you know that the “open” rate of emails is only 48% on a good day and 8% on a bad day? The 48% rate is for opt-in material. This means that there are a low number of people taking the time to read your material most of the time. This is why it is important to repeat your messages. Yes, a few will read it several times, however, they will use the delete key quickly. 11.Are you commitment 100% to marketing when you do it? Are you playing full out when you are in marketing mode, or is your heart only half in it? 12.Is it making the money you expected? 13.Do you take “no” personally? 14.Do you take good care of your health and other parts of your life as well? There are lots more questions that you may want to ask yourself. What you want to come up with are 5-7 measurements for you to measure yourself against. If you still are having problems with defining this for yourself, ask other people who you feel meet that description. Is all of it dependent on “results” only? When I get” when I’m over there” when I have $X dollars in the bank, then I will be a good marketer. When you know what you are shooting for you will not ever come short or overshoot. This will keep you focused, clear and very attractive in the universe. Especially since most of it is competing against you. Thinking of Dropping Out of College?

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Michael Carter If rising tuition costs or personal concerns have made you consider dropping out of college or taking a break Id like to encourage you to reconsider. Dont Let Cost Stand in Your Way If cost is your primary reason for reducing your college hours or dropping out completely first pay a visit to your schools financial aid office. Have you applied for financial aid using the FAFSA? Priority deadlines for most colleges is late spring to early summer. However, most of the time students can still get some kind of financial aid as long as you apply before the school term begins. Another reason for visiting the financial aid office is there may be other sources of aid available to you that you are not aware of. Some colleges participate in state funded financial aid programs and special need based programs that you may qualify for. Your financial aid counselor can give you more information about alternative programs such as these. In addition, the financial aid office may be aware of local foundation and organization sponsored scholarships. In some colleges the financial aid office also handles scholarships. Other schools run a separate scholarship office. Either way, make sure you apply for all of the scholarships offered at your school. Many local social organizations such as the Lions Club, Business & Professional Women and Chamber of Commerce sponsor scholarships. Get out your local phone book and start calling organizations in your area. You may be surprised at what type of local scholarships may be available. Consider College an Investment in Yourself According to U.S. Census Bureau statistics, people with a bachelor’s degree earn over 70 percent more on average than those with only a high school diploma. Over a lifetime, this will make a considerable difference in overall earnings, standard of living and retirement savings. The power of a bachelors degree becomes even more apparent when seeking employment. Applicants with a degree are much more likely to be hired for a position than those without a degree. Specialized study in college prepares workers for a job field or industry. A general or liberal arts degree will help workers gain employment in a wide range of fields. Often your college major is not as important as just the fact that you have the degree. Finally, college is a time to explore your interests, talents and grow as a person. The experience you gain working with other students and professors will help you mature and be ready for not just the job market, but for deeper life experiences. Do You Have A Religious Addiction?

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Michael Tummillo I used to be bound by a religious addiction, that is, until the Lord delivered me. Looking back, I had no mind of my own where all things spiritual were concerned. I was subservient to whatever denomination I was affiliated with, bowing to manmade rules and dogmas both in Protestant and Catholic camps as I moved from one to the other. Though the Scriptures declare that “there is none good but God,” I was considered a good soldier, loyal and obedient through and through and very adept at rule-keeping. I was driven by my religious addiction and was much more diligent about serving the church (the denomination anyway), subconsciously trying harder to “be good and be seen” than I was trying to get to know Jesus through His Word, fall in love with Him on a personal level, obey His doctrine and advance His Kingdom. Frankly, I don’t recall that kind of thinking ever entering my mind. My thoughts of God were more along the lines of “Hope He saw that!” while I adhered to church policies and procedures like a champ. In all honesty, I never knew what Jesus really taught for I rarely cracked the pages of His book (the Bible). I was a “good” kid and the Christian world in which I had immersed myself at the time was generally fine with that as I excelled - at least in comparison to others. I fit in. I was one of their own and was even considered an example to be followed. One minister even called me “a churchman” before the congregation. Talk about stroking my ego…!Don’t get me wrong; good guys are more useful than bad guys and good-deeds-for-the-day actually DO tend to help people. Unfortunately, God’s not impressed with our acts of self-righteousness, which are referred to as “filthy rags” in the Book of Isaiah. It’s all about the motivation of the heart. Those who hope they’re “scoring points” or making amends for past sins by their good works are sadly mistaken. I was deceived in believing that I was not only impressing others but that God must surely be pleased as well. There were those who mistook my good-guy nature for devout Christianity; including Christian women. I felt accepted and, to my carnal mind, that’s all that really mattered. At least, until the day came that I really needed Jesus and The Church and found I was left holding a bag full of nothing but powerless, meaningless, deceptive religion. THE TRUTH SET WILL SET YOU FREE…WHEN YOU KNOW IT Jesus taught that knowing the truth will set us free. Problem? In our reluctance to admit that we have any problems at all, we fall into denial, even where our spiritual lives are concerned. The religious addiction is not so much an addiction to anything in particular as it is paying consistent homage to a demon Spirit of Religion - a literal entity - the very Spirit that drove the self-righteous Pharisees. Sure, it’s much more socially acceptable to acknowledge that one has an addiction to religion than it is, say, to pornography or crack cocaine. That’s because the human tendency is to judge what’s on the outside because we really don’t have time to deal with the spiritual and emotional bondages and burdens of individuals. Generally, so long as they show up for services, look good and smell good and sing along, we’re OK with “them.” They might be living a private Hell but the Church at large is content NOT to believe anything could possibly be wrong with one who is committed to the denomination, follows the rules and does the work of the group or attends services every time the door is open. Such a one is often lauded as a model of the faith. Those afflicted with a Religious Spirit are often folks who have struggled with “other” addictions during the course of their lives (e.g. alcohol, drugs, sex) or are Adult Children of Alcoholics. Actor and Director Mel Gibson was recently arrested for drunk driving. An interview with Dianne Sawyer was re-run this morning where he admitted how easily he was addicted to almost everything including drugs and alcohol. That’s the nature of the beast. Apparently, the transference of one addictive lifestyle for another is fairly common, and when addicts come to faith in Christ, such a transference of spirits often occurs. Such demons can be dealt with and commanded to leave but, sadly, far too few Believers believe that they have that authority…or they don’t believe in demons at all (Satan loves that about us). In many cases, an individual’s relationship with God can be stunted by his/her upbringing. Let’s face it, we’re receptacles, taking in good and bad from day one, then dishing out whatever’s been poured in. Some have been raised in a performance mode, jumping through hoops to gain approval from parents or always in competition with siblings. Perhaps they were compared to the kids next door. Likewise, where that person’s spiritual life is concerned, they often struggle with trying to constantly gain acceptance or approval - in the eyes of the congregation, church leaders… and ultimately from God Himself. Though this type of misguided behavior can never satisfy, it’s all many individuals ever know and it defines the lackluster Christian life of multitudes of pew potatoes from cradle to grave.Such an addiction serves to attract other demonic characteristics such as self-righteousness, pride, false piety. As the afflicted person carries out his/her religious duties, a subconscious “look at me everybody” attitude gradually creeps in. Oftentimes, that attitude is simply a silent prayer such as, “God, I hope this pleases you” as that individual is never sure how much is enough. Have I prayed long enough? Did God hear that? Am I REALLY going to Heaven? Have I volunteered enough? Did I perform this or that duty often enough to appease the Father? How about the deacons? The religious addict never seems to grasp the fact that all their sins, past, present and future, were forgiven. These people tend to judge others by what they DO and themselves by their good intentions. The discerning Christian can see Satan’s claw prints all over this powerless, goody-goody behavior. Again, it’s a deception that far too many have fallen into. I’m not only talking about Christians here. All the religions of the world are ruled by this type of Spirit. He can be found in churches, synagogues, mosques and temples around the globe. Bear in mind that the word “religion” means “return to bondage” according to Webster’s Dictionary; Jesus, on the other hand, came to set us free. GIVE ME A SIGN! So, what is a religious addiction and how does one know when one has been so afflicted? There are some signposts we can be looking for but one must be brutally honest with one’s self-assessment just as an alcoholic must finally admit to his addiction before he can receive and apply the help that’s available. Confession, as you may know, means to agree with that which God already knows about us. 1 John 1:9 tells us “If we confess our sins (agree that we DO have a Problem and that Jesus IS the answer) He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” A Religious Spirit will rear its head when confronted with the truth. You can count on stirring up a demonic hornet’s nest every time. Often these attacks are quite extreme as in the situations where I have personally been dealt death threats and received hate mail and have been booted of my Internet provider over 20 times, mostly by people who claim to be Christians, in response to my online Christian broadcasts. It’s OK to simply disagree - or offer correction where one thinks I made a mistake. But some of these responses were quite excessive. The reason they reported me to AOL, I was told, was defined as “broadcasting objectionable material.” I can’t help but wonder if they respond the same way to off-color online humor, obscenity and the like. I knew a converted Jewish woman who claimed that she was receiving extra-biblical revelation from God. Despite the willingness of others in the Body of Christ to offer correction, reproof, teaching, etc., she had little use for any of it so long as God was speaking to her. So much for being part of “The Body.” Any “limb” that does its own thing is considered spastic, as I understand it. Most of her faith was based upon Old Testament teachings that suited her own needs. I confronted her on a number of occasions, one day causing her to cry and yell quite emotionally. In time, I helped her find a place to live, found her a job at the local university and even gathered a wardrobe for her as she owned very little. The response? She filed false charges against me. Oddly, her case never made it to court. Actually, she wound up in state jail herself after being convicted of a past crime that finally caught up with her. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you! Jesus Christ had little trouble where demons of sickness and the Spirit of Death was concerned but He faced stiff opposition from those controlled by the Religious Spirit. Certainly, they did not know they had given place to such spirits. “Surely we represent the true religion of God,” they must have thought. Who would want to be free of that which make them feel important and more righteous than others? For the chief priests and scribes who entertained religious pride and hardness of heart, even Jesus could not guide them to the Father. They had made their choice. ARE YOU A TRUTH-SEEKER? A thing is either true or it’s a lie. It’s that simple. That applies to the case of religious addictions as well. The same Spirit that motivated the Jewish religious leaders to conspire against and kill Jesus are still working today among people who know God. The Bible reveals many clues showing us signs that reveal when the Religious Spirit is present. It’s an extensive list of 23 symptoms but, if you’d be interested in seeing what some of those tell-tale signs may be, perhaps as a guide for some self-assessment, simply hit REPLY and type HELP in the SUBJECT Bar. Protestant or Catholic, if this subtle spirit has crept its way into your life, don’t delay. My Waffle Iron

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Paul Rinehart I had always wanted a waffle iron. At the age of six, I started asking for one, every Christmas and every birthday. I dreamed of making large, golden, square waffles that were slightly crispy on the outside and light on the inside. I got my first wok when I was six, my first ice cream machine a few years later, but sadly, no waffle iron. Im getting married later this year, and my fiance and I have already registered in at least one place. Can you guess what the first item I picked was? Thats righta waffle iron. It turned out to be a premature choice though, because to my surprise, I got my first waffle iron for Christmas. My fiance put in a good word for me with the rest of the family saying, Paul really wants a waffle iron. I love it; Ive already used it quite a lot since Christmas. I followed the recipe printed in the manual on the inaugural run. The more times I used it, the bolder I got. I made substitutions and even added other ingredients like swapping milk for buttermilk or oil for butter. I altered the amount of flour and even tried using pasteurized egg white; Ill never do that again. Pasteurized egg whites just dont fluff up the way non-pasteurized egg whites do. I hit pay dirt recently with my family. My latest experimental batter came out really well. So here it is, Paulys Long Awaited Waffle Iron Waffle Batter! Waffle Batter Ingredients: 2 cups of all-purpose flour 4 egg yolks 4 egg whites 1 pinch of cream of tartar 1 cup of butter milk 1 cup of sugar 2 tsp. of vanilla extract 2 tsp. of baking powder 1 pinch of salt 2 Tblsp. of melted unsalted butter First, add the cream of tartar to the egg whites. (Contrary to popular belief, cream of tartar does not produce greater volume, but it does assist in a more stable molecular structure). Whip the egg whites to a soft peak. You can tell your whites are done when you dip your beater into the white and it makes a peak that slumps quickly. Set the beaten egg whites aside. Next, beat the yolks and sugar until the mix turns a pale-yellow or off-white. Add your buttermilk and vanilla and mix. While stirring, gradually add the remaining dry ingredients, it helps if you mix the remaining dry ingredients separately first in a measuring cup. Make sure not to over mix it or you will excite the gluten in the flour and over-excited gluten makes for a very chewy waffle. Remember: Think golden, crisp on the outside and fluffy or light on the inside. Get your whipped egg whites and add them to the rest of your mixture. Gently incorporate them and dont over mix, or you will lose the bubbles. While stirring, add the butter. I have a Krups Wafflechef, it signals you when its heated and ready to go. Baking waffles in this iron only takes about 4 minutes. Dont go for a cheap, no-name iron, I highly recommend the Wafflechef. Pre-heat the waffle iron. Add about 2 oz. of batter on each square, making sure you dont put more than the iron can handle. If you do over-do it on the batter you will make a mess. Waffles are great for breakfast or even for dessert. They are great topped with maple syrup or whipped cream and fruit; even ice cream makes a fantastic topping! Happy waffle making! Trade Show Exhibit Booth - 7 Tips to Improve Yours

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Patty Stripes Once you have decided to participate in a trade show, half your work is done. The other half starts with exploring ideas on how to get the maximum out of the event both in terms of brand building as well as sales enquiries. Here are seven easy to follow and cost-free implementation tips which would help you improve your trade show booth. 1. Balanced dcor The size of your trade show booth doesnt really matter. The main idea should be that you work towards achieving a balanced look for the space. The display material and the furniture should be spread evenly instead of concentrating in one section. The entire assigned space should look equal so that visitors find the booth attractive enough to visit it. 2. Treat it as a mini camp You are likely to spend most of your waking hours at the trade show booth for the next couple of days so it is advisable that you spend a few minutes in planning strategic and accessible locations for all items required. This also helps you avoid a mad scramble each time a visitor requests for some literature or a visiting card. For example, keep the enquiry form on a handy clipboard just under the table, keep visiting cards in your pocket for easy access, keep the high quality brochures under the table which can be reached without a lot of exercise etc. 3. Right amount of furniture Aim at right-ordering the furniture. Not so much that your trade show booth looks like a furniture display and not so little that you have no chairs to comfortably seat a tired visitor who might a good potential customer. The furniture should also be a match to your display and avoid the heavy sofa if you have limited space as you will always be skirting around it to get anywhere. 4. Get more lights than the neighbour This is really a good trick which has worked well with me in most of the international trade shows I have participated in. Order a few more lights than what the exhibitors are providing. You can argue that more lights would make you a sweat a bit more, but it would also make you stand out amongst similar stalls as the booth would look brighter and somehow more attractive. 5. Personnel should be trained on projects Sometimes due to shortage of personnel we might hire hosts for the trade show. It is something which cannot be avoided so it would be better that you plan in advance for this and give them sufficient training to them so that they do not appear ignorant to customer requirements. 6. Flaunt your best attributes Though this specific point has been mentioned in previous articles, it is also required to be mentioned here. You should have a concise communication strategy in all your display material to be able to attract visitors. Relevant graphics and a strong message delivery can make all the difference between your and your competitors stall. 7. Smile This is something which is a no-cost sure fire winner. You need to be cheerful but not overly friendly and have a genuine smile while talking to visitors. As the Chinese correctly said that a man without a smiling face should never open a shop and they surely know something about selling. Why is Everyone So Afraid to Talk About Religion in our World?

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Lance Winslow It is amazing the amount of problems that are caused amongst family and friends over the discussion of religion? What do they say; never talk about religion or politics amongst mixed company? Indeed, and for those who have they know that it can rapidly decay a conversation into a shouting match faster that the World land speed record holder on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. But why does this happen? Why are folks so caught up into these pre-indoctrinated fairy tales that they cannot see the forest for the trees? And why will each of these humans bet their life that they are right and fight to death for what they believe? Why are humans programmed in such a way? Who does it serve; certainly not the individual and definitely judging by all the current conflicts in the World not the whole of humanity. So may I then ask since all religion does is cause conflict, chaos and controversies that often turn into shouting matches, hatred and wars; then why do we allow these religions to persist in our World? World religions are not helping with the forward progression of the human species and the sooner we get rid of them, perhaps the better for all concerned. We need not fight over differences on belief based on ancient really just literature, which was created to enslave the masses. How Sleep Affects Our Skin

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Lori Stryker Sleep is a “natural, temporary loss of consciousness” (Robinson, 1941) necessary for our bodies to build up energy reserves and regenerate body cells and tissues. During sleep, the heart beats more slowly, breathing becomes slower, growth hormones peak, muscles relax and body temperature lowers. Newborn infants sleep almost continuously, gradually decreasing their need for sleep. In early childhood, 12 to 13 hours of sleep are generally required and this amount decreases to approximately 8 hours in adulthood. After the age of 50, sleep is often characterized by frequent night time wakenings, shorter dream lengths and less overall sleep (Bricklen, 1990). Many consider sleep to be of low priority among the many daily activities engaged in. It is estimated that the world’s population is depriving itself of one less hour of sleep per night than is needed (Awake!, 2004). Despite this view of night-time rest, sleep is a necessary, sophisticated process regulated by the brain. Operating as a 24- hour clock, chemical substances, such as melanin, are released in the body to trigger sleepiness. There are two main stages of sleep classified according to eye movement. The first is REM or rapid eye movement which is a shallow, dream-filled sleep. There are four sub-stages within REM sleep. The first sub-stage lasts 30 seconds to 7 minutes, and during this time the muscles relax while the brain produces irregular wave activity. The second sub-stage lasts 20 percent of the night and brain waves become larger as the body is asleep. The next sub-stage is called delta sleep, where growth hormones peak, and cell and tissue repair take place. Without delta sleep, which accounts for half of a night’s sleep, one will feel tired the next day. Every 90 minutes the brain enters the dream sub-stage, where brain wave activity is similar in pattern to being awake, but muscles are not able to move as when awake. This stage lengthens each repeated cycle during the night, and is crucial to preserving mental health and long term memory, since the brain sorts through short term memory and ‘deletes’ unimportant data. The second major stage of sleep is non-REM, or non rapid eye movement, where blood pressure drops and heart rate slows as the person enters a deep sleep. Short term sleep deprivation causes little physical harm, since the body compensates for the lack of sleep by increasing its adrenaline levels during the day. The body also attempts to get more sleep at a later time. A temporary shift in attitude may occur, such as feelings of pessimism or negativity (Bricklin, 1990). Sleep deprivation, even short term, can be dangerous if driving a car, or operating machinery. Sleep deprivation is thought to be the cause of half of all traffic fatalities on U.S. highways, and being awake 17 to 19 hours can cause the same limited reaction and ability as having a 0.05 percent blood alcohol limit (Awake! 2004). It is also implicated in many workplace accidents. Chronic sleep deprivation, which is caused by prolonged shortages of sleep, can lead to paranoia or hallucinations. This is also termed ’sleep debt’, and is characterized by irregular sleep patterns that do not allow the body to enter delta sleep. This can bring on a short attention span, memory and vocabulary loss as well as other symptoms. Among women aged 25-50 who tend to be “perfectionists”, many tend to suffer from shallow sleep as the wake centre of the brain remains active when it should be relatively inactive. Other complications from sleep deprivation include obesity, premature aging, fatigue, chronic memory loss and increased risk for diabetes, infection, cardiovascular disease and gastrointestinal disease. It is important, therefore, to obtain an adequate amount of sleep each night, since sleep also helps the body metabolize free radicals, which are thought to accelerate aging and cancerous growths. Obtaining a good night’s rest can be achieved. The following are suggestions to help towards the goal of night-time rest: - Avoid stimulants like caffeinated drinks before bed. - Avoid eating a heavy meal at night. A light snack might help if hunger causes you to wake up at night. - Create a pleasant, warm (body temperature drops when sleepy), noise-free bedroom with a comfortable mattress and pillow. - Avoid exercise before bed, however, regular exercise during the day aids sleep. - Avoid activities that increase anxiety, such as considering financial matters or discussing serious problems before bed. - If possible, a quick daytime nap lasting 20 to 30 minutes can impart positive physiological benefits. Prolonged naps impair sleep at night and may cause insomnia. - If experiencing insomnia, try getting up and engaging in another activity for a brief time and then attempt sleep again. - A warm glass of milk contains tryptophan, a natural substance thought to aid sleep. - Keep the bedroom dark, since the area of the brain which controls the sleep cycle is close to the optic nerves and thus sensitive to light (feeling awake) and dark (feeling sleepy). - Quit smoking, which increases blood pressure, heart rate and brain wave activity. How can you know if you are a healthy sleeper? - Sleep comes easily at night. - You rarely wake up during the night and can fall back asleep with ease. - You wake at the same time each morning without an alarm. - You feel alert during the day and do not feel the need to nap. Getting a good night’s rest refreshes the body, mind and attitude. It is as vital to our health as good food and exercise. The phrase “beauty rest” is more than a quaint idea, it is a fundamental task in the quest for external and internal beauty. References: - Bricklin, Mark, (1990).
